Recreating Partnership:
A Solution-Oriented, Collaborative Approach to Couples Therapy by Phillip Ziegler and Tobey Hiller
|

|
|

|
Traditional approaches to couples therapy are often based on particular
theories about what causes relationship discord and normative models of a “healthy” relationship. These
approaches work fine so long as both partners accept the therapist’s theories and are willing to follow the therapist’s
suggestions. All too often, however, couples don’t fit neatly into the
therapist’s plans--and in such cases, the therapist concludes that, for one reason or another, the couple was unsuited
for couples therapy. In fact, numerous research studies and meta-analyses conducted over the past 40 years, reveal that,
regardless of model or technique, only about 1/3rd and 1/2 of couples report significant positive changes
at termination. And, within 6 months half the successful couples have relapsed.
Recreating Partnership Couples Therapy™ is
different! Rather than being based on a theory of what makes
relationships work, it is based on what numerous research studies conducted over the past 40 years tell
us makes couples therapy work.
While RPCT draws ideas and techniques from solution-focused,
narrative and other constructionist therapies, it is, above all, a collaborative and strength-based approach -- every
therapeutic enterprise with each couple is custom-tailored to their unique needs, concerns, desires and strengths and
resources.
Recreating Parnership is filled with vivid, often moving, case transcripts clearly
showing how these two highly experienced and sensitive clinicians handle many of the common challenges encountered in working
with couples.

Ziegler and Hiller have provided us with a great resource for helping couples recreate the kind of stories
that produce happy and vibrant relationships. Their model is bright and readily applicable, integrating a wide variety of
collaborative and competency-based ideas and techniques; the case illustrations are specific and enlightening. Recreating
Partnership is valuable and well-written, a book that should be on the shelf of everyone who works with couples. I recommend
it highly! --MICHAEL HOYT, PhD.,author of Some Stories are Better than Others; editor of The Handbook of Constructive
