What is the Action 2000 Coalition?

Fondly called A2K, the Action 2000 Coalition is a statewide grass roots effort by part-timers, convening as a coalition of the major California community college faculty groups. We are focusing on the issue of part-time faculty pay inequity, and our charge is to raise awareness among other part-time faculty, full-time faculty, students, and local legislators. We plan to send the message to the state chancellor and governor that the 30,000 part-timers around the state are beginning to form a unified front, with the support of CFT, CTA, CWA, CCCI, FACCC and CPFA. Our spring 2000 actions will build a foundation for future advocacy.

What are We Doing?

A2K has declared April 3-7, 2000 Part-Time Faculty Equity Week. Campus leaders around the state will help coordinate the events during this week in their districts. A2K is providing camera-ready support materials to each campus which will make it easy to heighten awareness of the pay equity issue. These materials include information sheets on pay equity, flyers, a sample press release, ideas to custom-tailor the effort to each campus, petitions for faculty, staff, and students to sign supporting pay equity, 37% Freeway Flyer "Dollars", artwork and more. Campuses can order buttons with bold equals signs, and graphically exciting t-shirts with "Part-Time Faculty: 100% COMMITMENT, 37% PAY." Furthermore, we are developing a Freeway Flyer mascot, an academically gowned and mortarboarded figure with wings, who will stage appearances at campuses during PTFEW.

On Friday, April 7th, campus leadership is encouraged to arrange an appointment with local legislators to address part-time faculty pay equity and present petitions collected during PTFEW. Student journalists and/or local media may be invited. Copies of all petitions collected on each campus statewide will be presented en masse to the state chancellor at the conclusion of PTFEW.

97 of California's 107 community colleges campuses are currently participating in Part-Time Faculty Equity Week.

Support

Action 2000 is an unfunded, ad hoc organization. We are dependent upon the support of locals and larger organizational entities. For spring 2000, we have a small budget that does not even supply printing of flyers for campuses that have no organized union affiliation or funding. Action 2000 is both implementing plans and building our organization at the same time. Time is short. Many thanks for to the faculty organizations and their local affiliates for supporting us finanacially, and allowing us to support efforts to mobilize part-time faculty on California's community college campuses. If you would like to make a donation, make your check payable to A2K and send to: Richard Lewis, 25291 Yacht Drive, Dana Point, CA 92629.
